Blackwork is a generic name used for a number of similar styles of embroidery, some counted thread, some freestyle.  Blackwork was prominent in fashions throughout the 15-17th centuries.  When used on collars and cuffs it was often worked in Holbien Stitch as a reversible pattern (same on both sides of the fabric) using a small repeating motif.

Included is a comprehensive stitch diagram for the motif worked in Holbien Stitch, tips for hiding your ends on the reverse to make this a reversible design, and construction instructions for the traditional folded hem.
